The chart above reflects contribution of agriculture sector to country’s overall economy, involvement of labor force in agriculture sector and comparison with percentage rural population. It also provides percentage of total land area that is suitable for agriculture further breaking it down into % land that is arable, % land cultivated land and % land used for major cereal production. Combined, these indicators give a comprehensive view on a country’s dependence on agriculture, on three fronts – economically, in terms of dependant population and land resources availability. With climate change many developing countries will face reduction in land available under cultivation and rising population, particularly urban population will put additional pressure on land available for agriculture. It will also have implications on contribution of agriculture sector to GDP and dependence on labor force on agriculture for sustenance.
